Driveway Installation in Georgetown, KY

This first thing anyone will notice when pulling up to your home is the concrete driveway.  The drive way will affect curb appeal, it helps set the property value, and it also provides everyday function of the property.  The driveway will take quite the beating throughout the year due to the many factors that it experiences.  These include tough winters, changing temperatures, freeze and thaw cycles, and a transition of vehicle functions.  When we talk to homeowners, we make sure to remind them that it doesn't matter what it will look like the day when the concrete is placed, it only matters what it will look like years from now down the road.

As with anything that has a foundation, the base material of the structure is the most important part.  This starts with proper planning and appropriate site preparation.  Even before the concrete is placed, we will take the time to understand the site conditions, any drainage patterns, and the site stability.  Depending on the age of the neighborhood and the home, Georgetown properties often have changing site conditions.  When we come to you house to understand those conditions, we will ensure ourselves that the work we do will incorporate anything that we find.  This will result in having a secure and flat drive way for years to come.

After we do our initial site inventory, we with then move on to excavation and compacting the stone base beneath the driveway.  These steps are crucial because the properly compacted concrete base material helps distribute the weight of the vehicles so that the pavement will never fail by falling through the base material.  We find many driveways where this step was not performed properly and you can now see the results in the deficient driveway.

After the base material installation is complete, we will then move on to installing the forms and establishing the final shape and dimensions of the driveway.  When reinforcing is appropriate, we will then set the reinforcement.  Again, depending on the situation, the reinforcement material might be required to improve the strength of the concrete for really heavy construction traffic.

Next, we will move on to the concrete placing and finishing portion of the project.  The placement process requires specially trained contractors and it requires a high level of attention to detail.  Our workers will place the concrete and finish the areas to your needs.  We mostly use a broom finish because it will provide traction during slippery weather and it provides a nice clean look.  There are some other things that can be done to add some complexity to the driveway to make it stand out in the neighborhood.

After the concrete is placed, we will then move on to installing control joints.  This part of the project can be ignored and you will find cracks all over the driveway.  The control joints must be designed to where the pavement will naturally want to crack.  We then install the joints in those areas to "create" a crack in the pavement. If this is not done properly, your driveway will look like a fractured picture.

Drainage around the new concrete area is a very important concept.  We cannot have the concrete trap any water.  Then the water would seep beneath the pavement and cause cracks during freeze and thaw cycles.  Proper drainage around the concrete will prevent these cracks.

After the control joints are installed, the concrete needs to cure.  This is the time in which the concrete will generate its strength.  We need to make sure that no one walks on the concrete until  it is completely cured. Allowing for full cure will make the concrete last the longest.
